Venture Capital is a type of private capital provided by institutional investors to new growth businesses, in exchange for equity. Venture Capital investments are usually high risk and high return, in that the investors aim to realise their investment once the investee company has grown exponentially in value. Venture Capital firms will invest in a portfolio of ventures, and are most interested in new companies with high growth potential, as these opportunities are capable of providing the expected financial returns and successful exit within the required timeframe.
Venture capital and private equity are often used interchangeably. Strictly speaking, venture capital firms focus on funding promising new businesses, where private equity firms focus on investing in established businesses, and extracting value through restructurings and better management.
