It can be difficult to enter this arena if you do not have commerce & industry experience and often a part or full CIMA qualification. Cost accountants usually operate within manufacturing and other operationally focused businesses and play a vital role in adding business value by identifying inefficiencies within production processes. The role is highly operationally focussed so you will be in regular contact with operational managers and directors. You will report on, and to some extent manage; efficiencies, margins, variances and output, ranging from raw materials to end product.

Is it for you?
Commercial experience is a prerequisite. Excellent communication skills and confidence are essential as clients you will liaise with can often be demanding and challenging. It is an excellent way to gain insight into manufacturing and operational processes.

Career Prospects
The experience in this area will position you well for project accounting, analysis, management accounting which can lead to commercial finance positions or general operational management roles.
